You buy a coin, short the same amount on a perpetual futures contract, and collect the payment that traders on one side of the market make to the other every few hours. Price can do what it likes, because the two legs cancel.

That is the pitch, and the arithmetic in most guides stops there: 0.01% every 8 hours is 10.95% a year. A book using 3x margin, with ordinary fees, earns less than half of that over a one-month hold. This guide works through the real numbers: what the rate means, what it nets, and how a fully hedged position can still be liquidated.

What the funding rate is and why it exists

A perpetual future never expires, so nothing forces its price back to spot on a set date. Funding does that job. When the perp trades above the index, the rate is usually positive and longs pay shorts, which makes holding the long less attractive. When the perp trades below the index, the rate turns negative and shorts pay longs.

Payments pass between traders; the exchange does not collect them as a fee. The amount is simple: position value × funding rate. A $75,000 short at +0.01% receives $7.50 at settlement.

Formulas vary by venue, but a widely used design combines two parts: a premium component that measures how far the perp has traded from the index, and an interest component, often about 0.01% per 8 hours. A clamp pulls the result to the interest component when the premium is small. That is why so many contracts show exactly 0.01% in calm markets: it is a default setting, not a measure of opportunity.

How the trade works

The classic version pairs long spot with an equal short perp. With BTC at $60,000 and $100,000 of capital at 3x margin, you buy 1.25 BTC for $75,000, post $25,000 as margin, and short 1.25 BTC on the perp. Each $1,000 move adds $1,250 to one leg and takes it from the other.

<defs><marker id="fa1" markerWidth="9" markerHeight="9" refX="7" refY="4" orient="auto"></marker></defs><text x="380" y="30" font-size="16" fill="#0f2947" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">One position, two legs: price risk cancels, funding remains</text><rect x="40" y="60" width="270" height="160" rx="8" fill="#ffffff" stroke="#c9d6e6"/><text x="175" y="88" font-size="13" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">SPOT WALLET</text><text x="175" y="118" font-size="18" fill="#0f2947" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">Long 1.25 BTC</text><text x="175" y="144" font-size="13" fill="#34465c" text-anchor="middle">$75,000 at $60,000</text><text x="175" y="178" font-size="13" fill="#16a34a" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">BTC up $1,000: +$1,250</text><text x="175" y="200" font-size="13" fill="#c8102e" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">BTC down $1,000: -$1,250</text><rect x="450" y="60" width="270" height="160" rx="8" fill="#ffffff" stroke="#c9d6e6"/><text x="585" y="88" font-size="13" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">PERP WALLET</text><text x="585" y="118" font-size="18" fill="#0f2947" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">Short 1.25 BTC perp</text><text x="585" y="144" font-size="13" fill="#34465c" text-anchor="middle">$25,000 margin, 3x</text><text x="585" y="178" font-size="13" fill="#c8102e" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">BTC up $1,000: -$1,250</text><text x="585" y="200" font-size="13" fill="#16a34a" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">BTC down $1,000: +$1,250</text><text x="380" y="132" font-size="13" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">net price</text><text x="380" y="156" font-size="17" fill="#0f2947" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">P&L = $0</text><rect x="150" y="258" width="460" height="74" rx="8" fill="#e9f7ee" stroke="#16a34a"/><text x="380" y="284" font-size="14" fill="#0f6b33" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">Perp above index: longs pay shorts</text><text x="380" y="310" font-size="13" fill="#0f6b33" text-anchor="middle">0.01% per 8h on $75,000 = $7.50 per settlement, $22.50 per day</text><line x1="585" y1="256" x2="585" y2="228" stroke="#16a34a" stroke-width="2.5" marker-end="url(#fa1)"/><text x="380" y="358" font-size="13" fill="#34465c" text-anchor="middle">Funding is the only income. Our overview of the main types of crypto arbitrage compares it with cross-exchange and triangular trades. Funding arbitrage is paid for carrying a position over days or weeks.

Compare rates properly: interval first, capital second

Screens often rank rates without showing the interval, and the same 0.01% can mean very different things:

Settlement interval

Periods per year

Rate that equals 10.95% APR

If you see 0.01%, APR is

8 hours

1,095

0.01%

10.95%

4 hours

2,190

0.005%

21.9%

1 hour

8,760

0.00125%

87.6%

The second adjustment is the one most pages skip. Quoted APR is earned on position value, not on your capital. With 3x margin only $75,000 of $100,000 is working, so a 10.95% APR is 8.2% on capital before costs. The general formula is yield on capital = APR × L ÷ (L + 1), where L is the perp leverage.

The real math: what it earns after costs

Take the $75,000 position and use illustrative costs: 0.10% per spot fill, 0.05% per perp fill, and 0.02% slippage on each of the four fills. A full round trip costs $285: $150 on spot, $75 on the perp, $60 in slippage. Your own fee tier may be far lower or higher, so plug in your actual numbers.

Dividing cost by daily income gives the break-even. At 0.01% per 8 hours, you earn $22.50 a day, so the first 12.7 days only pay for the trade.

<text x="400" y="30" font-size="16" fill="#0f2947" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">Net profit by days held after a $285 round trip</text><line x1="90" y1="300.0" x2="710" y2="300.0" stroke="#dfe7f1" stroke-width="1"/><text x="80" y="304.0" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="end">-$400</text><line x1="90" y1="256.4" x2="710" y2="256.4" stroke="#0f2947" stroke-width="1.6"/><text x="80" y="260.4" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="end">$0</text><line x1="90" y1="212.7" x2="710" y2="212.7" stroke="#dfe7f1" stroke-width="1"/><text x="80" y="216.7" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="end">$400</text><line x1="90" y1="169.1" x2="710" y2="169.1" stroke="#dfe7f1" stroke-width="1"/><text x="80" y="173.1" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="end">$800</text><line x1="90" y1="125.5" x2="710" y2="125.5" stroke="#dfe7f1" stroke-width="1"/><text x="80" y="129.5" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="end">$1,200</text><line x1="90" y1="81.8" x2="710" y2="81.8" stroke="#dfe7f1" stroke-width="1"/><text x="80" y="85.8" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="end">$1,600</text><text x="90.0" y="322" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">0</text><text x="193.3" y="322" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">5</text><text x="296.7" y="322" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">10</text><text x="400.0" y="322" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">15</text><text x="503.3" y="322" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">20</text><text x="606.7" y="322" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">25</text><text x="710.0" y="322" font-size="12" fill="#5a6b80" text-anchor="middle">30</text><text x="400.0" y="344" font-size="13" fill="#34465c" text-anchor="middle">Days held</text><line x1="90.0" y1="287.5" x2="710.0" y2="250.6" stroke="#8a9bb0" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="613.6" cy="256.4" r="5" fill="#fff" stroke="#8a9bb0" stroke-width="2.5"/><text x="613.6" y="245.4" font-size="12" fill="#8a9bb0" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">25.3d</text><line x1="90.0" y1="287.5" x2="710.0" y2="213.8" stroke="#1d4ed8" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="351.8" cy="256.4" r="5" fill="#fff" stroke="#1d4ed8" stroke-width="2.5"/><text x="351.8" y="245.4" font-size="12" fill="#1d4ed8" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">12.7d</text><line x1="90.0" y1="287.5" x2="710.0" y2="66.5" stroke="#16a34a" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="177.3" cy="256.4" r="5" fill="#fff" stroke="#16a34a" stroke-width="2.5"/><text x="177.3" y="245.4" font-size="12" fill="#16a34a" text-anchor="middle" font-weight="700">4.2d</text><text x="706.0" y="58.5" font-size="12" fill="#16a34a" text-anchor="end" font-weight="700">0.03% per 8h: +$1,740</text><text x="706.0" y="203.8" font-size="12" fill="#1d4ed8" text-anchor="end" font-weight="700">0.01% per 8h: +$390</text><text x="706.0" y="274.9" font-size="12" fill="#6b7c90" text-anchor="end" font-weight="700">0.005% per 8h: +$52.50</text>

Illustrative. Watch that last one. If one venue settles hourly and the other every 8 hours, your income and your payments do not arrive together, so compare the rates over a full cycle. If you are unsure whether a carry approach suits your capital and time at all, our guide on choosing an arbitrage strategy is a good place to start.

A six-step routine for a spot-perp position

Normalise the rate. Convert the funding rate to APR using the contract’s interval, then multiply by your deployed share of capital to get yield on capital.

Calculate break-even days. Add both legs’ entry and exit fees plus slippage, then divide by expected daily funding. With several, the monitoring is what takes time, and that is where software earns its keep. Reading funding, margin and position data reliably depends on the plumbing covered in our guide to connecting to crypto exchange APIs. Use keys with withdrawals disabled, and keep alerts running independently of the bot itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is funding rate arbitrage risk-free?

No. It removes most directional price risk, but you still carry funding reversals, liquidation of the short leg, basis moves at exit, and exchange or stablecoin risk.

How much can funding rate arbitrage make?

It depends on the rate, how long it lasts and how your capital is split. At 0.01% per 8 hours, 3x margin and $285 of round-trip costs, a $100,000 book nets about $390 over 30 days, roughly 4.7% annualised. Sustained higher rates pay more, but they rarely last.

What happens when funding turns negative?

If you hold long spot and short perp, you start paying instead of receiving. A short negative spell can be cheaper than paying fees to exit and re-enter, so set an exit rule in advance, based on the average rate over several settlements.

How often is funding paid?

Many contracts settle every 8 hours, others every 4 hours or every hour, and intervals can differ by contract on the same exchange. You generally receive or pay only if you hold the position at the settlement time, so check the contract specification.

Can you do funding arbitrage across two exchanges?

Yes. A common form is long perp where funding is low and short perp where it is high, which needs no spot. You earn the difference, but you fund two margin wallets, and moving collateral between venues can be too slow in a fast market.

Do you need a bot for funding rate arbitrage?

Not to open a position. Automation matters for watching margin, alerts and exits around the clock, because liquidation risk does not wait for you to wake up. Speed of entry matters much less here than in latency arbitrage.

All figures in this article are illustrative examples, not forecasts or performance claims.
