They didn’t. Whether it pays comes down to arithmetic most articles skip: what is left of a 1-2 pip gap after spread, commission, slippage and rejected fills, and how many weeks a broker account keeps producing that edge before it gets throttled. This guide works through those numbers with a transparent model, so you can plug in your own costs and see where you break even.

The examples below are illustrative. They use round, realistic-looking inputs so the mechanics are easy to follow, not to promise a return. Your results depend on your broker, your feed, your execution and your discipline.

Why “is it profitable?” is the wrong first question

Arbitrage is not a forecast. You are not betting that EUR/USD will rise. You are exploiting the fact that one price (usually a slow broker’s quote) lags another (a fast reference feed) for a few hundred milliseconds. If the strategy is set up correctly, the gross edge is nearly always positive. Most traders who lose money do so because costs and execution quietly take the whole edge, not because the idea stopped working.

So the better question is: is my net edge per trade positive, and for how long? That splits into three things you can measure:

Net edge per trade: the captured price move minus every cost you pay to capture it.

Trade count: how many qualifying signals your setup actually fills per month.

Account lifetime: how long a given broker account keeps filling those trades at normal quality.

Monthly profit is roughly the product of the three, minus your fixed costs. If any one of them is close to zero, the whole thing is close to zero.

Where the money actually goes: from gross gap to net edge

Take a typical latency arbitrage signal: the fast feed moves, the slow broker hasn’t updated yet, and your software opens a position at the stale price. Say the move you catch averages 1.6 pips. Commission of $7 per round-turn lot is about 0.7 pips.

Three-quarters of the gap goes to costs, and this is a good setup. Two things follow:

Commission is usually the biggest single line. At $7 per round-turn lot, 0.7 pips leaves before the market even moves against you. That is why commission tier and account type matter as much as raw speed.

Slippage is the swing factor. Spread and commission are fairly predictable. Slippage isn’t. It depends on your latency, the broker’s execution model and, increasingly, on whether the broker has already tagged your account as toxic flow. We look at it in detail in how to beat slippage in latency arbitrage.

A worked monthly model (and three ways it can go)

Here is the same trade scaled up to a month. Assumptions: 1 standard lot per trade, 25 filled signals per trading day, 21 trading days, so 525 trades a month. Fixed costs (VPS near the broker’s server, data feed, software licence amortised) are put at $350/month. The only thing that changes between the columns is execution quality.

Line item

Good venue

Average venue

Degraded (account flagged)

Captured move (pips)

1.6

1.4

1.1

Spread (pips)

0.2

0.2

0.3

Commission (pips)

0.7

0.7

0.7

Average slippage (pips)

0.3

0.4

0.6

Net edge per trade (pips)

0.4

0.1

-0.5

Net per trade at $10/pip

$4.00

$1.00

-$5.00

Gross variable P&L (525 trades)

$2,100

$525

-$2,625

Fixed costs

-$350

-$350

-$350

Net month

+$1,750

+$175

-$2,975

The same strategy, with the same software and the same trader, goes from a solid month to a painful one, and the only change is about half a pip of execution quality. This is the honest core of the “is it still profitable” debate. The strategy hasn’t died. The margin is thin, and it belongs to whoever controls execution best.

It also explains why signal count is a trap. In the degraded column, more trades means a bigger loss. Once net edge per trade turns negative, every extra fill costs you money.

The break-even line

A useful way to read the table is to ask: how much slippage can this setup absorb before it stops making money? With a 1.6-pip captured move, 0.2 spread, 0.7 commission and $350 of fixed costs over 525 trades (about 0.07 pips per trade), break-even slippage is roughly 0.63 pips. The margin after costs is thin, so execution quality decides who profits.

What is a realistic monthly return from forex arbitrage?

There is no honest single number. In our illustrative model, the same strategy swings from about +$1,750 to about -$3,000 a month on one lot, depending only on about half a pip of execution quality. Be very wary of anyone quoting fixed monthly percentages without showing costs and slippage.

Is arbitrage trading risk-free?

No. Pure textbook arbitrage is close to risk-free, but retail forex arbitrage carries execution risk (slippage, rejections), counterparty risk (brokers restricting accounts or cancelling trades), technology risk (outages, feed errors) and, for hedged or statistical styles, market and model risk.

How much capital do I need to start?

Margin needs are small because positions are held briefly, but a single small account is fragile. What matters more is enough capital to spread across several venues and cover fixed costs (server, feeds, software) for a few months while you tune execution.

Why do most traders lose money with arbitrage?

Usually for three reasons: an account type whose commission and spread eat most of the edge, a server too far from the broker so slippage is high, and carrying on trading an account after the broker has degraded its execution. All three are measurable, and all three can be fixed.

Is latency arbitrage better than statistical arbitrage?

They suit different people. Latency arbitrage has a larger, faster edge but depends on broker behaviour and infrastructure. Statistical arbitrage is less sensitive to latency and broker policing, but it takes real market risk when correlations break. Many experienced traders run more than one style.

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Article","headline":"Is Forex Arbitrage Still Profitable in 2026?
