Most of them are free. Some are “cracked” copies of commercial software that normally costs thousands. A few come with a Telegram link and a request to run an installer as administrator.

This guide explains, without hype, what those files usually are, why a working latency arbitrage system cannot be a single free EA file, why the strategy tester makes them look brilliant, and what a real arbitrage setup actually costs to run each month. If you are deciding whether to download something free or pay for software, this is the checklist we would want you to have first.

What a “free HFT EA” usually turns out to be

After looking at what is actually being shared on forums, file sites and marketplaces, almost every “free HFT” or “free latency arbitrage” download falls into one of four buckets:

A relabelled scalper, grid or martingale. The code opens many small trades with tight targets, sometimes averaging down. Nothing in it is high-frequency or arbitrage; the label is marketing. These can look great for weeks and then lose the account in one trend day.

A “single-chart arbitrage” EA. It claims to exploit price delays but only reads the quotes of the broker it is attached to. With no faster reference price to compare against, it has nothing to arbitrage (more on this below).

A cracked or pirated copy of commercial software. Someone removed the licence check and re-uploaded it. It may have worked at some point, but it no longer receives updates, and you have no idea what else was changed in the code.

Malware wearing an EA’s clothes. An “installer”, a DLL, or a “license activator” that asks for your trading account login, investor and master passwords, or broker portal access. This is the most expensive kind of free.

None of these is a reliable route to the edge that real latency arbitrage is built on. To see why, it helps to look at what the strategy actually needs.

Why latency arbitrage can’t live inside one free EA

Latency arbitrage is a comparison between two prices for the same instrument: a fast reference feed (a liquidity provider, an exchange or a fast broker) and a slow broker whose quotes update a fraction of a second later. When the fast price jumps and the slow broker has not caught up yet, the system buys or sells at the stale quote and exits once the slow price moves.

That means a working system needs, at a minimum:

A second, faster price source that arrives before the broker’s own quotes.

A comparison engine running continuously, measuring the gap tick by tick and filtering out noise and spread.

Fast execution on the slow broker, ideally from a server close to that broker’s trade server.

Risk controls for slippage, requotes, maximum exposure and news spikes.

A typical free EA has only one input: the chart of the broker it runs on. It can’t see a price that hasn’t reached that broker yet, so it has no gap to trade. Whatever it calls “arbitrage” is something else.

<rect width="760" height="360" rx="14" fill="#f6f8fb"/>
<text x="190" y="34" text-anchor="middle" font-size="17" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Working arbitrage stack</text>
<text x="570" y="34" text-anchor="middle" font-size="17" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Typical “free HFT EA”</text>
<line x1="380" y1="20" x2="380" y2="340" stroke="#c9d3e0" stroke-width="2" stroke-dasharray="6 6"/>
<rect x="30" y="60" width="150" height="54" rx="8" fill="#e6f4ec" stroke="#1f9d55" stroke-width="2"/>
<text x="105" y="83" text-anchor="middle" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#14532d">Fast feed</text>
<text x="105" y="101" text-anchor="middle" font-size="11" fill="#14532d">price arrives first</text>
<rect x="200" y="60" width="150" height="54" rx="8" fill="#fdecec" stroke="#c0392b" stroke-width="2"/>
<text x="275" y="83" text-anchor="middle" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#7f1d1d">Slow broker</text>
<text x="275" y="101" text-anchor="middle" font-size="11" fill="#7f1d1d">quotes lag behind</text>
<line x1="105" y1="114" x2="170" y2="158" stroke="#0f2947" stroke-width="2"/>
<line x1="275" y1="114" x2="210" y2="158" stroke="#0f2947" stroke-width="2"/>
<rect x="90" y="158" width="200" height="56" rx="8" fill="#0f2947"/>
<text x="190" y="182" text-anchor="middle" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#ffffff">Comparison engine</text>
<text x="190" y="200" text-anchor="middle" font-size="11" fill="#cfe0f5">gap, spread and noise filters</text>
<line x1="190" y1="214" x2="190" y2="246" stroke="#0f2947" stroke-width="2"/>
<polygon points="184,240 196,240 190,250" fill="#0f2947"/>
<rect x="90" y="250" width="200" height="40" rx="8" fill="#ffffff" stroke="#0f2947" stroke-width="2"/>
<text x="190" y="275" text-anchor="middle" font-size="12" fill="#0f2947">Order on the slow broker</text>
<text x="190" y="318" text-anchor="middle" font-size="12" fill="#14532d">+ VPS near the broker, risk limits</text>
<rect x="470" y="60" width="200" height="54" rx="8" fill="#fdecec" stroke="#c0392b" stroke-width="2"/>
<text x="570" y="83" text-anchor="middle" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#7f1d1d">One broker chart</text>
<text x="570" y="101" text-anchor="middle" font-size="11" fill="#7f1d1d">the only price it sees</text>
<line x1="570" y1="114" x2="570" y2="152" stroke="#0f2947" stroke-width="2"/>
<polygon points="564,146 576,146 570,156" fill="#0f2947"/>
<rect x="470" y="156" width="200" height="58" rx="8" fill="#ffffff" stroke="#8a97a8" stroke-width="2"/>
<text x="570" y="180" text-anchor="middle" font-size="13" font-weight="700" fill="#33415c">“HFT” logic</text>
<text x="570" y="198" text-anchor="middle" font-size="11" fill="#33415c">scalp, grid or martingale</text>
<rect x="470" y="236" width="200" height="54" rx="8" fill="#fff7e6" stroke="#d68910" stroke-width="2" stroke-dasharray="5 4"/>
<text x="570" y="259" text-anchor="middle" font-size="12" font-weight="700" fill="#7a4b00">No faster reference</text>
<text x="570" y="277" text-anchor="middle" font-size="11" fill="#7a4b00">so no gap to arbitrage</text>

Latency arbitrage is a comparison between two feeds. An EA that only reads its own broker’s chart has nothing to compare against.

Why the strategy tester makes free EAs look brilliant

Most free “HFT” EAs are sold on a backtest screenshot. The problem is that the MetaTrader strategy tester is the worst possible place to judge a strategy whose edge is measured in milliseconds.

Synthetic ticks. In MT4’s “Every tick” mode, ticks are generated by interpolating minute bars. The tester invents a smooth price path that never existed. A strategy that trades tiny moves can “profit” from that artificial path.

Perfect fills. The tester fills at the price the EA asks for. There is no queue, no requote, no last-look rejection and no slippage unless you add it by hand.

No second feed. Even MT5’s real-tick mode replays one broker’s history. It cannot reproduce the gap between a fast feed and a slow one, which is the whole basis of latency arbitrage.

No broker reaction. In live trading, brokers notice consistently fast, profitable short trades and start adding delay or widening spreads. A backtest never fights back.

The result is a familiar shape: a near-perfect backtest curve, a decent first week live, then a steady slide once slippage and execution delays appear.

<rect width="760" height="340" rx="14" fill="#f6f8fb"/>
<text x="380" y="32" text-anchor="middle" font-size="17" font-weight="700" fill="#0f2947">Same EA, two environments (illustrative)</text>
<line x1="70" y1="290" x2="720" y2="290" stroke="#8a97a8" stroke-width="1.5"/>
<line x1="70" y1="60" x2="70" y2="290" stroke="#8a97a8" stroke-width="1.5"/>
<line x1="70" y1="200" x2="720" y2="200" stroke="#c9d3e0" stroke-width="1" stroke-dasharray="4 4"/>
<text x="62" y="204" text-anchor="end" font-size="11" fill="#55657a">start</text>
<text x="395" y="314" text-anchor="middle" font-size="12" fill="#55657a">weeks</text>
<text x="40" y="175" text-anchor="middle" font-size="12" fill="#55657a" transform="rotate(-90 40 175)">equity</text>
<polyline fill="none" stroke="#1f9d55" stroke-width="3" points="70,200 130,188 190,175 250,163 310,150 370,138 430,124 490,112 550,99 610,86 670,74 720,64"/>
<polyline fill="none" stroke="#c0392b" stroke-width="3" points="70,200 130,192 190,190 250,198 310,206 370,212 430,224 490,231 550,244 610,252 670,262 720,270"/>
<rect x="470" y="122" width="14" height="14" fill="#1f9d55"/>
<text x="490" y="134" font-size="12" fill="#14532d">Strategy tester: synthetic ticks, perfect fills</text>
<rect x="470" y="226" width="14" height="14" fill="#c0392b" transform="translate(0,-18)"/>
<text x="490" y="220" font-size="12" fill="#7f1d1d">Live: slippage, delays, spreads</text>
<text x="160" y="232" font-size="11" fill="#7f1d1d">early luck</text>

Illustrative shape, not real account data. Our article on slippage in latency arbitrage shows how quickly a fraction of a pip per trade changes the result.

The hidden costs of cracked and pirated software

A cracked copy of a commercial arbitrage tool sounds like the best of both worlds: real software, zero price. In practice it is usually the worst option.

It is frozen in time

Arbitrage is an arms race. Brokers update their execution settings and detection methods, platforms release new builds, data feeds change their formats. Legitimate vendors ship updates to keep up. A cracked copy stops at the version someone stole, so the edge it once had fades within months. We describe the broker side of this in how brokers detect latency arbitrage.

You are running a stranger’s code next to your money

To remove a licence check, someone had to modify the program. You can’t know what else they added. Trading software runs with access to your terminal, your account credentials and often your whole VPS. Stolen trading passwords, hijacked accounts and hidden “fee” trades sent to someone else’s account are all reported outcomes of running unofficial builds.

No support when something breaks

Setting up two feeds, symbol mapping, VPS location and broker settings is where most arbitrage attempts fail. With a pirated copy there is no documentation that matches your version, no one to ask, and no fix when the platform updates.

Legal and account risk

Using pirated software breaks the vendor’s licence and, in many countries, copyright law. Some brokers and prop firms also terminate accounts that run unauthorised or flagged software. Saving a licence fee is not much use if the trading account is closed with the profits.

What a working arbitrage setup actually costs

“How much does an HFT bot cost?” is the wrong question, because the software is only one line in the budget. Here is what a realistic latency arbitrage setup involves. Ranges are typical market figures for orientation, not quotes, and they vary by provider and region.

Component

What it does

Typical cost

Arbitrage software

Compares feeds, decides and executes, manages risk

One-time licence or subscription, depending on edition

VPS near the broker

Cuts the distance between your orders and the trade server (LD4, NY4, TY3)

About $30-150 per month

Fast data feed

The reference price that arrives before the slow broker’s

From free (a fast broker account) to paid professional feeds

Trading capital

Margin on the slow broker (and the hedge broker for two-leg setups)

Your choice; start small while testing

Trading costs

Spread, commission and slippage on every trade

Often the largest cost over a year

Your time

Broker selection, setup, monitoring, rotating brokers when the edge fades

Several hours at the start, then regular checks

Two things stand out. A “guaranteed” or “no-loss” claim is a reason to walk away.

Broker choice matters as much as software. Before you buy anything, read how to choose a broker for arbitrage, because the best tool in the world can’t fix a broker that rejects every profitable order.

Where “free” is fine

Free isn’t automatically bad. Free education, documentation, demo accounts, trial versions from identifiable vendors and open-source research libraries are all useful. You can learn how feeds, latency and execution work without paying a cent, for example from our free HFT and arbitrage education materials. Paid or not, what you want to avoid is anonymous executables that promise profits and ask for your trust.

When you are ready for real software, compare what each HFT Arbitrage Platform edition includes (strategies, feeds and connectors) and budget for the VPS and trading costs alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free HFT bot that actually works?

Not for latency arbitrage in any lasting way. The strategy needs a fast reference feed, a comparison engine, low-latency execution and constant updates as brokers change their settings. Free single-file EAs don’t include these, and cracked copies of commercial tools stop being updated. Free education and demo trials are useful; free “money-making” bots are not.

Can I backtest latency arbitrage in the MT4 or MT5 strategy tester?

Not meaningfully.
